Crossing over the fence with the firearm poses significant safety risks as it increases the likelihood of an accidental discharge. When crossing with a loaded firearm, there is a chance that the firearm could accidentally go off as you go over the fence, especially if you are maintaining your grip on the weapon while balancing or maneuvering. Safe firearm handling practices dictate that a firearm should be unloaded before crossing any type of barrier.

Ensuring that the firearm is unloaded before crossing helps eliminate the risk of an accidental discharge and protects both the individual and those nearby. Other options, such as placing the firearm under the fence, unloading it before crossing, or handing it to a companion, are recognized safe practices that minimize the risk associated with moving firearms across barriers.
